When Jesus took up his cross, He walked uphill. Since you follow Him on the upward trek, you should remember the warning signs along this mountain road. As you climb higher, you will be tempted to look down on others. Chesterton put it well, “I have my doubts about all this real value in mountaineering, in getting to the top of everywhere and overlooking everything. Satan was the most celebrated of Alpine guides, when he took Jesus to the top of an exceeding high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth. But the joy of Satan in standing on a peak is not a joy in largeness, but a joy in beholding smallness, in the fact that all men look like insects at his feet.”

You have to follow the Lord to Jerusalem, so uphill it is. And one way to stay humble on this glory road is to follow that old puritan prayer, “Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up, that to be low is to be high.” Walk humbly and you won’t mistake men for insects. Walk humbly and you will find large joy in the intricate glories of insects.
