The wise man said that a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a mugger and want like an armed man (Proverbs 24:33). No text seems to be more in harmony with exhortations along the road to Jerusalem, exhortations about setting your face like flint the way your Lord did. But, the psalmist comes along reminding you that you are not God. You sleep and apparently He doesn’t: “He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3-4).

All of the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve run out of gas. Sleep is a daily white flag. Raise it with a chuckle. Seeing you have to lay horizontal every 16 to 18 hours or so, you might as well put your head back in faith. Set your face like flint in the morning. It will be soft as cotton through the night. But Jehovah keeps watch. What are you going to do? Stay up forever? I’d pay to watch. What are you going to do? Sleep without entrusting yourself to His protection? You couldn’t pay me enough to watch a man endure such a night.
