As you come to eat and drink at this table, do so remembering that Christ is more committed to your gratitude than you are. This is the essential truth. We all know that we should be grateful. But as with all of God’s commands, we must look away from ourselves in order to fulfill them. The flesh is no help at all. Christ is the most grateful among us. And it is fitting that He is not only our bread and wine, but also the Grand Host of this thanksgiving table—the Master of Ceremonies.

If you look within, or if you look to the law apart from Christ, you will know well enough that you are short on gratitude. But if you look through this bread and wine, you will see Him whom your soul loves. You will see Him smiling upon you, supplying you with more than you need. You will see Him giving thanks. So come in faith, and welcome to Jesus Christ.
