Fear is an inescapable concept. It is not whether you will have fear, but which fear you will have. The psalmist says of a certain man, “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings” (Psalm 112:7). Earlier in the psalm, he identified the kind of man in view: “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments” (Psalm 112:1).
Evil tidings are the common denominator. You have no doubt suffered your fair share of them already; and here you are, knowing that some little unknown goblin will eventually knock on your door. You don’t know exactly what the monster will look like, and it is folly to attempt to stare into the future and see his ugly face. You cannot see him, but you can see God’s law. You can see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. If you do, all of your fear will be used up. In the light of His face, you will begin to feel the levity of godly fear. You will begin to laugh at all goblins, whatever their shape or size.
