Many think that man plays his cards poorly because he underestimates his guilt. And I grant that there are some who go the way of the adulterous woman who “eats, wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done no wickedness’” (Proverbs 30:20). But certainly, for the Christian, the truth runs in the opposite direction. He plays his cards poorly because he underestimates the grace of God. On that day when faith shall be sight and we see God’s favor face to face, we will no doubt say, “I should have bet it all.”
So take by faith now what you will then take in through your pupils. Your enemies fall at this table. They always have. The Egyptian firstborn at Passover. Haman at Esther’s banquet. Judas at the inauguration of this feast. And in each instance, God’s enemies were confounded. The Egyptians filled Israel’s pockets. Haman begged Esther for his life. Judas and the chief priests played hot potato with the blood money until they finally cast it into the potter’s field, where strangers could rest in peace amid broken clay until rising again. Yes, your Lord prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies. But those enemies are not marching rank upon rank against you; they are in complete disarray. So come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ.
