Man wants to strip the physical from the spiritual and the heavenly from the earthly. But this table makes that very difficult. When Christ instituted this meal He declared that this bread is His body and this cup is His blood. And as we partake of this bread and wine, we fellowship with Him really and trully. There are mysteries here, mysteries that we cannot run the math on. Mysteries we love. While we cannot run the math on it, there is a lesson in it.
That lesson is: Do not attempt a dichotomy between the spiritual and physical, between the heavenly and earthly. The two are distinct and that is an important distinction. But they can never be severed. Christ has bound them together in His person, in the womb of the Virgin. Why would we try to tear them apart?
In this advent season, the gifts you purchase, the tables you spread with meat and drink, the snow, the dark, the cold, these are all symbols full of meaning. Give the gifts and the meaning. Don’t fail to give the gift. And don’t fail to give the meaning. In this world, there are not “spiritual meaning” people and “tangible gift” people. Through this bread and wine, Christ says we get the sign and the signified. So come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ.
