The wonderful thing about the Word of God is that it is always turning man head over heels, as it turns the world upside down. Find any average unbelieving man, and he will tell you that the loud and proud will get theirs; they will push their way through in this world. And this same man would grant that the meek and lowly will push their way to heaven. The man who walks small may receive the kingdom from above, but the man who walks tall will receive eight blocks in Seattle.

But Jesus steps in, saying just the opposite. The mystery of the meek is that they take possession of bricks and buildings. The meek are quiet according to the Apostle Peter (1 Peter 3:4). And they stay relatively low to the ground according to our Lord (Matthew 11:29). Meekness Himself toppled Jerusalem from a donkey (Matthew 21:5). And so it is with His followers. The high and mighty are so full of themselves, they have no room left for anything else. But the meek and lowly, not being full of themselves, have room to inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). And they will inherit it.
