Roe v. Wade: An Idol Has Fallen

As I have said before America is a Christian nation. We have forgotten that over time even though we still praise Yahweh in our songs and on our money. Indeed his name is carved into marble and pressed into concrete all across this land, in court rooms, legislative chambers, and town halls. While we have turned our back on him at many times and in many ways, he has, in these recent days, reminded us that we are one nation under his authority.

Last week, the abominable Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which has hung as a dark could over this land for nearly 50 years, was struck down. And God is the one who cut it down. And what he cut down was not merely a murderous decision by the high court. What he cut down was an idol. This point is an essential one. Christians need to see it. And those who have rebelled against the God of this nation need to see it.

Now, I have said that the citizens of this great nation need to see that God has cut down an idol like he cut down Dagon in the days of Israel of old. But I must clarify an essential point. We need to see that God has cut down an idol. But our seeing that he has done so is not what makes it so. God has cut down an idol in our midst whether Americans grasp that he has or not. What I am saying is that it will be far better for you if you see that this is most certainly what has occurred.

If you grasp that this is what the LORD has done, then you will be better situated to cut through the ramblings that have already begun. You will avoid being played in the days ahead. The central thing that has happened among us is that the God of this nation, and that is the Christian God, has acted with his mighty arm. He has shot his bow from the heavens and his arrows have shattered the idol that many in this land have worshipped for decades—

“But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly shall they be wounded” (Psalm 64:7).

It is for this reason that so many fill the streets with their rebellious protests. It is for this reason that many wail in Tik Tok videos. They just watched their god die.

It is a fearful thing to watch your god get his head cut off.

Modern people, even modern Christians, have trouble grasping what God just did. We have forgotten that the world is enchanted. We have forgotten that there is an unseen realm. We have much to learn from C. S. Lewis regarding idolatry. In his wonderful book The Last Battle, the idol Tash, a golden laden stone, showed up on day, walking, moving, living. An Ape had called for Tash and Tash came—

“It seems, then,” said the Unicorn, “that there is a real Tash, after all.” “Yes,” said the Dwarf. “And this fool of an Ape, who didn’t believe in Tash, will get more than he bargained for! He called for Tash: Tash has come . . . Ho, ho, ho!” chuckled the Dwarf, rubbing his hairy hands together. “It will be a surprise for the Ape. People shouldn’t call for demons unless they really mean what they say.”

Now many Christians will readily agree that abortion is demonic. And that is an accurate observation. But now we have an opportunity to grasp what is meant by that phrase. The citizens of this land, through their representatives, have determined to worship a false god for many years now. The babies have been blood sacrifices to that idol. Roe was a massive altar to that false god. And that bloody altar was set up by the Supreme Court of our land. The citizens have trusted in the federal government as god, offering up their children in the hope that they would receive life from the state. In essence these idolaters have said, “Grant me the right to slaughter my child, and I will give you my life, my all.”

The first thing that needs to be said, and this is what the Supreme Court said last week, is that the Constitution of the United States does not give you the right to murder your child. Indeed it does not even recognize your right to murder your child, no matter how many times you read the 14th amendment. Tash would give you the right to murder your child. But he is a false God and the Constitution does not recognize false rights allegedly given to you by a false god. This is a Christian nation, remember.

Your rights are not granted to you by a false god. And that also means that they are not granted to you by human government, be it local, state, or federal. If you think that your rights come from the state, then you are worshipping an idol. Your rights come to you from the Living God. And the Living God has not give you the right to murder your baby whether he be in the womb, the crib, or walking down the sidewalk.

So people have been worshipping an idol. And that idol has been cut down by the LORD who is presently striking the nations with a rod of iron (Psalm 2:9). As in Dagon’s day, so in ours. People will stand this idol back up again and go to worshipping it just as before:

“Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again” (1 Samuel 5:3).

We are in a long war. But that is just the point you must see. We really are in a war. And Jesus is the King, drinking from the brook by the way so he might keep up the pursuit until all of his enemies are made his footstool (Psalm 110:7).

What all of this means for the saints is that you must offer yourselves freely in the day of Christ’s power (Psalm 110:3). And today is that day of his power. That means you must rejoice and be glad. You must hold feasts. And that feasts is in the plural. You must eat the fatty meat and drink the sweet wine and lift you glasses to the King who crushes the serpents head.

And you must find courage to speak the truth about reality, to announce what the LORD has done in our midst. He is the God who plagued the Philistines with boils, who threw the horse and his rider into the sea. He is the God who leveled the walls of Jericho. And I am not talking about “the Old Testament God.” I am talking about your God: His name is Jesus Christ. He is the Second Adam who has founded a new humanity that will fill this earth with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

It is your Christian duty, in this Christian nation, to represent him faithfully. Our God has used means to this end. One of those means was Donal J. Trump. One of those means was Supreme Court Justices who didn’t shrink back from pagan taunts and threats. But in the final analysis, Yahweh has done this. And the Philistines are trembling.

Now is not a time to compromise, or only strike the ground 3 times with your arrows—

And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice” (2 Kings 13:19).

Now is a time to recognize that God is in your midst. And he says to you:

Be still, and know that I am God:

I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10).

If you are a Christian who acknowledges any right to abortion, then you are a Christian who has left the camp of Israel to offer the sacrifices of the wicked. You must repent. And there are many of you in this country who have done so.

If you are a Christian who is looking to console those who are in terror at this moment, having seen their god buried under the Red Sea, then that is a good impulse. And the only way you can have compassion upon them, the only way you can console them is by telling them to turn away from their idolatry and worship the risen Christ. There is no other consolation for them.

And so I would close with a word to those who have offered their children at the altar of the modern day Molech. This is the word of the Lord to you:

Your god is dead. And there never was salvation in him. He lied to you. And the true God has slayed him. Your god has sons. And they are false gods themselves. They are retreating to lands like New York, Illinois, and California. You can find crippled and twisted prophets in those lands. You can find priest-kings like Gavin Newsom and Lori Lightfoot. But the God who slew your centralized idol is going to slay them too. And the death that is coming to these idols at the hands of the Living God is a kindness to you. He is announcing to you that there is salvation in no other name.

Even though you have blasphemed the true God, you can turn to worship him now. There is forgiveness with him that he might be feared. So you must repent of your sin and be baptized, every one of you in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit, for the remission of your sins.

The Son of God was born of the virgin, he suffered under Pontius Pilate, he was crucified, died, and was buried. He has risen again. And you must trust him, calling him Lord. Salvation is preached to you in Christ’s name.

This true God has had no mercy on Roe. He will have no mercy on Obergefell either. But he will have mercy upon you in his Son Jesus. So come away from your sins to Christ.
