On one of those long summer days as a kid, I first discovered how strange it was to have two eyes. I looked out at a boat on a lake. But being at a distance from the lake myself, there was a large tree between me and the water. Closing one eye, the boat hovered just alongside the trunk of the tree. Closing the other eye, it disappeared behind the tree trunk. I do not know how many times I have played this game since, but as I’m sure you can attest, it is one of the grand joys of life.

A certain kind of flint-faced man is tempted to live as a cyclops. In an effort to be single-minded, he is single-eyed. But this causes him to miss things that are there, like I missed the boat when only one eye was open. The Christian faith has you seeing Christ everywhere if you have eyes to see. He is the greater Moses, the second Adam, the Son of David. Israel drank from the rock in the wilderness, and the Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). He is not only the Word, but the Word made flesh. The Word is not only God, but with God (John 1:1). The goal is not double vision, for God is One. But you should have an eye on Christ in everything you do, because He really is there.
